I'm from Pittsburgh and love the Steelers.

professional claim to fame:
Prior to Click.TV, I founded and was CEO of two online finance companies: 1View Network, which was acquired by Digital Insight (DGIN), and Avolent Corporation. I have an MBA from Stanford University, as well as MA and BA degrees in Economics from Stanford.

my obsessing with video started...
I was the only guy in my group of college friends who had a video camera. It was one of those huge VHS monsters, and my friends and I shot obnoxious Jackass-kind of stuff. I actually crammed that thing into my backpack for my first backpacking trip of my life with those guys. Pretty stupid…

what you do for fun when not working on web video...
I wrestle, toss balls around, collect rocks, read books with 10 words or less per page, and change diapers. Yes, I’m father to a wonderful 2-year-old boy. Here’s a video of my wife’s and my life with him.

Then I was VP of Engineering for Avant Interactive and implemented a video hotspotting technology for customers such as AT&T, CBS, Discovery, the U.S. Military, and the National Geographic Society.

my obsessing with video started...
As an undergraduate researcher at the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center (BMRC) doing video conferencing research using Mbone tools such as Vic and Vat.

my obsessing with video started...
With Mister Rogers. Not so much the program as the man himself. Mister Rogers was one of the original advocates of consumer video rights with regard to the VCR.

why talk to me...
I'm the Senior Web Engineer
and...
What? There is other stuff to do beyond working on Web video? I write a lot. I work on madeofglass.com, my personal Web site. I watch movies, read books (and comic books), and play a few video games on my DS. Sometimes, I even go outside to see the sun. Wow, I am a grade-A nerd. Do I get any points back by saying that I have girlfriend? No? Sigh.

professional claim to fame:
PLEASE ADD FORMER JOB. I combined my Comp Sci BS with a Kinetic Design BFA to earn the title of `Web Samurai,' consulting on dozens of projects over the years as both a designer and an engineer. I have an MFA in Interactive Media and completed a Master's thesis involving life-logs and Internet video.

my obsessing with video started...
In high school, making short film after short film with friends, culminating in our masterpiece--a 30-minute movie called "The Mask of Evil" that is as terrifyingly low-budget as it sounds. The premiere of the movie had over 50 people show up.

Because I can tell you the best dance clubs in Romania

professional claim to fame:

my obsessing with video started...
When I discovered Flash Communication Server, way back in 2004. The steep learning curve didn't stop me and I started working on a video chat software that was to become AVChat. Several months later in 2005 I met Mike and got working with him on ClickTV.

no one's watching

why aren’t more of your site’s visitors watching your video?

Your audience is patient, content to sit back and watch your video all the way through, and satisfied with the story as you’ve presented it, right?

We thought not.

Online video is a new medium. It’s not a TV on the computer. Have you ever seen anyone at their computer, leaning back in their chair, with their hands folded in their laps? We haven’t.

Nope, your users are sitting in front of their computers with their fingers itching to grab their mouse and start clicking around.
your audience is impatient

They aren’t just going to sit back and watch your video from beginning to end. They want to watch video the way they surf the Web: by hopping around to specific parts – instant “clip”-style viewing.

Add clickable bookmarks anywhere inside your videos and enable instant “clip”-style viewing.
your audience wants control

Your users are used to discovering things on the Web through search. They want to watch only what they want.

Enable them to search inside the video.
your audience wants a personal and genuine interaction

Behind a video is a real person. Your audience wants to connect with you and get the behind-the-scenes story.

Add personal, running commentary that will display with your video.
now for the radical part ... your audience wants to talk back

You can either let the user-generated revolution run you over, or you can give users more control over their experience with your content.

Enable users to create their own "commentary" clips to blog or share.
